My first OB appointment!

I could barely sleep Sunday night in the excitement and anticipation of my first OB appointment on Monday. Considering how tired I have been and how much I have been sleeping that is huge! It seemed like forever ago (8/22) that we learned I was pregnant with Baby Bean. I would have loved to have seen my OB sooner, but scheduling conflicts pushed the appointment back. Thankfully, I can easily email my OB so what little questions I had before my appointment (mostly related to exercise) she answered for me.

Mr. Healthy Diva met me at the clinic and sat through my first appointment with me. I honestly thought that he would ask more questions, but he was really pretty quiet. He looked a little squirmy during the actual exam and then said he wouldn’t be staying for the blood draws, haha.

When Dr. Lessman tried to find Bean’s heartbeat she couldn’t locate it because my uterus sits really far back. She said that this is fairly common and just meant good news for me- I could have my ultrasound later in the day instead of waiting a week.  Unfortunately, Mr. Healthy Diva had a client appointment so he had to go back to work and missed my ultrasound.  I was pretty bummed about that.

The ultrasound was one of the coolest things. I couldn’t believe how much detail there was of Bean. It was easy to make out little arms and legs. In one shot Bean’s little feet were kicking around like crazy which just solidified that they are going to be a little runner. The tech that did my ultrasound was amazing. She explained everything that she was doing and made me feel really comfortable.  I just wished that Mr. Healthy Diva could have been there- seeing Bean on the screen made everything seem real.

Baby Bean's debut!

Little feet that were kicking around like crazy!

Bean is real!!! There really is a baby!

Heart beats!

Everything in the appointment checked out perfect- Bean’s heartbeat was at 180 which the tech said was perfect. My vitals were all good as well. In one month I gained 6 pounds which is slightly frightening, but it is what it is. Bean’s official due date is 4/27/2014.

9.23.13-- 9 weeks, 1 day

Questions for you:
IF you have been pregnant….
Did you stay active throughout your pregnancy?
How much weight did you gain?
Did you cry at your first ultrasound? People asked me if I did, but I didn’t. I was just excited to see Bean!

  1. During my first pregnancy I played competitive college level basketball till about 7 and a half months. That was about when I started to lose my balance. Stay as active as you can! I only gained 27 pounds with my first. Almost twice that with the second and I was not nearly as active with the second. It's worth repeating...Stay as active as you can!

I had ultrasounds at both and I don't remember if I cried, I remember being super excited and so happy. Congrats friend!

    1. Playing basketball while pregnant is pretty impressive!!!!! I am just learning to go slower because really I am not training for anything right now. I like going to farmgirlfit because I get to see my good friends and they keep me motivated. Running has been a slight struggle just because my body hasn't really recovered from Spokane to Sandpoint. My knee and hip ache when I run more than 5 miles. Hopefully that will go away soon!

  2. Yay!! The ultrasound is amazing, isn't it? Love that those little feet were running!! I was able to run most of pregnancy and did lots of walking and swimming toward the end. I had no problem staying in the normal weight gain range. Excited for you!!

    1. I loved the first ultrasound, but now I can't wait for the second. I wish that we got one at every OB visit!

I was just thinking that I need to hit the pool up again, but my membership expired a couple of weeks ago. I would love to be able to work on my swimming during the winter so that I can do more triathlons next summer.

    1. Thank you Kristen. I haven't felt pregnant except for being super tired and hungry (zero morning sickness) so seeing the ultrasound really just made it seem real. :-)

    1. Thank you Lauren!!!! I can't wait for my next ultrasound because it
will be at 20 weeks when you can really start seeing some of the
babies features. Of course I hope bean looks just like me. :-)

  5. So exciting!! I never cried at either ultrasound for Elliot or Oliver. I was just fascinated that the technology could see something so tiny growing in me! :) As far as working out, um, that didn't happen! :) I wish it had, but it didn't. I'm so so so excited for you!!

  7. So exciting!! I imagine seeing Baby Bean on the screen must have made things really that more real. From what I hear everyone looks forward to the second trimester with the hopes that it brings more energy. I'm sorry I don't have more advice to add about exercising while pregnant, but it sounds like you have a great, supportive doctor to keep you healthy and active!

    1. It made everything seem real because other than being tired and
starving all of the time I have felt great. I am not sure how long it
would have taken me take a pregnancy test because I have had no
morning sickness at all. Everyone keeps telling me how lucky I am so I
am hoping that I can make it out of the first trimester without
getting sick. I am already starting to get some of my energy back. I
am not 100% so I am also looking forward to the second trimester. :-)

    1. The 3D imaging is incredible. I didn't realize how detailed it would
be and that they would even be able to do it so early.

I don't feel adorable, so thank you. I am starting to feel like a
sausage in some of my clothes already. Yikes!!!

  9. I tried to stay pretty active but not as active as I would have been if I did it again;) I think my activity level really helped me have a quick and easy delivery:) Yay for seeing your little bean!

    1. I am trying to stay as active as possible, but keeping an open mind. If I have to cut back, I would be fine with that. I am just happy that I am getting some energy back and that I know that baby bean is real. :-)

  13. The first sight of your baby is momentous! Knowing that a life - a hearbeat - is starting inside your tummy is a feeling only mothers would understand. Her health is in your hands, Tasha. Stay healthy, and do everything you can to assure safe delivery. Weight gain is normal. Do not worry about that. And yes, you have to stay active to avoid edema, which is dangerous during pregnancy.
