Sundae Sunday

Technically I was supposed to run a 10K (Pints to Pasta) in PDX the morning after Warrior Dash with Cassie. Unfortunately, I had to pass on this race because Cam signed up for flag football and his first game was Sunday morning. I was super bummed about missing this race because it was a Run With Paula event and I love the races that she puts on. I never miss a race when I sign up for them so this would definitely be a first for me.

We departed for Spokane around 9:00 pm on Saturday night so that we could catch some shut eye before Cam's game the next morning. Cam's game happened to be at Dwight Merkel where the Sundae Sunday 10 mile run would also be taking place that morning. I figured that I mise well go ahead and use these 10 miles as an easy training run. The race started at 8:00 am and Cam's game started at 9:15 am; I would be done just in time to run over to his game. The idea sounded great until my alarm went off at 7:00 am on Sunday. After getting back home around 2:00 am, I was beat! I hit snooze more than once before peeling myself out of bed. All of the mexican food I shoveled into my mouth the night before wasn't sitting so great and I was covered in bruises from Warrior Dash. I figured that this could make for an interesting 10 miles, but I was only using this as a training run. Keeping my pace between 7:30-7:45/mile; nothing faster- even if I felt great. (training run, training run, training run!!!!!)

The "training run" went great- I felt awesome. I definitely could have ran much faster if I was racing, but that wasn't the case. I had several nice conversations with people as I cruised past them along the course. I can always tell that I am not racing when I can chit chat to people for over a mile and not lose my breath or my stride. A couple of guys coasted off of me until they fell back, but they did comment that they liked my steady pace (thank you GARMIN). I did pick up my pace for about 1/2 of a mile to evade a heavy breather who was trying to coast off of me. I can't stand a heavy breather- they are the worst! The guy sounded as if he was going to code! Not good, not good! Luckily I lost him, or I should say he lost me. :-) One guy that I ran with for about a mile said that he had tried to chase me down at Flying Irish the previous Thursday, but that he couldn't keep up. He must have recognized me by my blonde pony tail????

In the end, I am glad that I crawled out of bed. It was a great feeling to get 10 miles pounded out and still make it to Cam's game (they WON too!!!!). I finished in 1 hour 15 min 47 seconds which equates to a 7:36/mile pace. Right on target, had lots in reserve, but had fun too. Looking at the last time I ran Sundae Sunday in 2009, I knocked off over 4 minutes from my time. Not too shabby for a training run!

Next on my agenda is the Sandpoint 1/2 marathon this coming Sunday 9/18. I have every intention of kicking some major booty at this run. GOALS: #1 Run under 1:34 minutes, #2 Have fun, #3 Place in my age division, #4 Smile!!!!

I'm a warrior...

...well not really. After running the Warrior Dash over the weekend I can conclude that I am a marathoner and not a warrior. The event was one of the craziest freakin' days of my life (as their website had promised).

The obstacles were more difficult than I was anticipating. There were 12 in total. I bypassed 2 of them because I didn't want to get hurt (CIM means way more than WD). In case you are curious I bypassed "road rage" and "satan's steps". I am not sure how over half of the participants were able to complete this course because 90% of them I saw looked like they didn't know what e-x-e-r-c-i-s-e was. WD definitely brought PDX's finest out of the wood work. ;-)

Rockin' it

Superstar!

Some hardcore "warriors"

Cam got a tattoo just for the occassion

Rockin' the sweat 'staches

One of the 12 obstacles (this one was towards the end)

Before we got all dirty

This was after we got to "wash" off

We are a good lookin' bunch!

Warrior Superstars!

The four of us all had a great time. We finished in 53 minutes 13 seconds. Obviously not the fastest 5K of my life at the pace of 15 min 12 sec/mile, but it was the funnest!

Running into fall

My fall training and racing schedule is shaping up to be quite busy. My marathon training officially commences on 9/12 giving me 12 weeks of solid training before CIM. Luckily, I have a great training base under my belt from this summer. It will be interesting to see how my body responds to marathon training this time around. I am hoping for the best because I feel like I am in better shape than I have been in the past and I am healthy AND injury free (knock on wood!!!!).

My race schedule has changed a tad, but not too much. Instead of doing a 10K on 10/9, I am going to run a 1/2 marathon. My long run on that day was already scheduled to be 13 miles so I am not making any drastic changes to my plan. This particular 1/2 marathon isn't my favorite- I have ran in it twice and it isn't fun. If you are familiar with the Bloomsday course, Doomsday Hill is at about mile 9. Not fun.

I am looking forward to the next couple of weeks. Tomorrow I have Warrior Dash in PDX, Sunday I have Pints to Pasta 10K in PDX and next weekend I have the Sandpoint 1/2 Marathon. I haven't ran at Sandpoint before, but I heard that it is a great out and back course.

The HTC blog is coming....I promise....I haven't organized my photos and thoughts yet, but it is almost done. :-)

Windermere!

The last couple of weeks have flown by! I had every intention of updating Healthy Diva, but I had way too much going on to even think about updating. It all started with selling my Jeep which escalated into this huge 2 week ordeal where that could have possibly gone wrong did (most of you have already heard the story). In the end I go the car I wanted and everyone, including the husband, is happy. On top of the car, I was busy at work etc. Bad excuse I know. Lets get to the fun stuff!

My last couple weeks of training went good and I felt great overall. I was pretty nervous for Windermere, but excited to be racing again. It has been how long????? The week seemed like it took twice as long as it should have to be over. I hate that!

The weather in Spokane has been crap lately so I was really starting to get concerned about the rain/wind that was being forecasted. Luckily, it wasn't so bad. Little chilly/windy at the start, but it wasn't what I had imagined. Out on the course it got pretty warm and there was quite a wind in spots. Wish it would have been more of a tailwind, but I will take that over rain any day. I felt great running wise until about mile 5 when my feet really started to hurt. I made the mistake of wearing my Nike Frees (which I had been training in) which probably weren't the best option for running a 1/2. Once my feet started hurting then my legs started cramping. It was a good lesson learned and I went home and ordered a new pair of Brooks (I know those work great!!!)

Overall, I finished and was happy that I was even in shape enough to run a 1/2. Of course I wasn't thrilled I didn't get my PR, but then again I haven't raced in how long????? I was more happy that I was able to get an automatic qualifying time for the Houston 1/2 in January.

Saturday also marked the last day of my most recent session with Amy. Now that I have been training with her for 18 weeks I am starting to see some muscle definition. Who would have thought?! I still have pea shooters, but they have a touch more definition. :)

Our next official session doesn't start until June, but in the meantime we still get to workout on Tues & Thurs mornings. No more Saturday class for the summer....what am I going to do???? Angie came up with the brilliant idea to start a class running group for Mon & Wed mornings. Should be fun!

I can't say enough just how amazing Amy Black is. She has done so much for me physically & mentally- I can't even begin to describe how much I have transformed since January. I am only a couple of pounds away from where I need to maintain my weight. If you would have asked me in January if I thought I would weigh 125 lbs in May I would have laughed at you and said "NO WAY". My skinny clothes that I wore the summer Cam & I got married are falling off of me. If my wedding dress wasn't boxed up I would put it on- I bet it would be too big.  I am telling you, Amy Black is WONDER WOMAN!!!!!1

Next up on my schedule is the Helvetia 1/2 on June 11th. Last year I "wogged" it in 1hr 58min. This year it would be nice to run it at least 10 minutes faster, even though I would prefer 15 minutes faster. :) I will be wearing better shoes for it!

The rest of the summer I just plan on training for my 1/2 in October and start my marathon training for December. I am doing a 10K in July and will also be doing the Warrior Dash in September (yes I am stoked to get a viking helmet). Warrior Dash is a 5K, but like Cassie said, there probably isn't much running involved. I might have to sign up for the Pints to Pasta 10K for the next morning......
